Elks Awards Day - 2008

An audience, estimated at 500, was in attendance as the Lincoln Elks Lodge # 80 held their Youth Day Program on Monday, May 5th at Southeast Community College. On April 9, 2008 Governor Dave Heineman proclaimed the first week in May to be "Elks National Youth Week." Elks Lodges across the State and Nation hold honors convocations for the students in their Lodge jurisdiction. Dave Kirby, Youth Activities Chairman for the Lodge emceed the evenings activities which included a welcome by Jeanette Volker, Chancellor of Southeast Community College.

Twenty-six seniors were awarded scholarship totaling $30,000.

Certificates of Recognition are awarded to juniors during this program. These awards are presented to one student from each of the 14 Lincoln and surrounding area high schools in the following 16 categories:

Scholarships were awarded to students from nearly all of the Lincoln Public High Schools plus Pius X, Lincoln Christian, Norris, Waverly, Crete and Norris. Sixteen of the scholarships awarded were provided by the Lincoln Elks Lodge Charitable Fund and are funded by individuals or groups connected with the Lodge. The Lodge awarded ten scholarships, with four of them going to children or grandchildren of members of the Lodge.

Two "Most Valuable Student" applications advance to the State Elks Association for further judging and the possibility of being granted additional scholarship monies.

The evening concluded with refreshments furnished the Lodge.
